July 30 is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

In Cyprus and across the world, Caritas is committed to the fight against the sale of children, women and men into slavery as beggars, prostitutes and forced labourers. It is represented in the global Christian Organizations Against Trafficking in Human Beings network (COATNET) which works across borders to raise awareness about trafficking and to assist victims and survivors. The fight is and must be multilayered— addressing root causes, such as poverty and the lack of opportunity, while advocating for laws to protect victims, punish perpetrators and secure decent working conditions.

In Cyprus, the ongoing division of the island only serves to enable traffickers. Working to build the channels of cooperation and habits of cooperation that can disrupt those who would exploit and enslave others, Caritas Cyprus is an active participant in the island-wide network of experts created through the United Action Against Human Trafficking project.
