Discussing Who Needs Humanitarian Aid and Why with Local Students

As part of their Service Learning curriculum, grade 10 students at the American International School in Cyprus discussed humanitarian aid with Caritas Cyprus’ Executive Manager Elizabeth Kassinis on February 20, 2023. The students have been at the forefront of their School’s efforts to raise funds to assist recovery efforts in the areas of Turkey and Syria affected by the recent earthquake as well to collect food and clothing to benefit Caritas Cyprus’ local beneficiary population. The group discussed the importance global awareness on the one hand and local action on the other; considered the criticality of the four principles of humanitarian action—namely, humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence; and debated the role of various humanitarian actors, including faith-based organizations.
