We wish to express our deep concern following President Donald Trump’s announcement of the decision of the United States to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the relocation of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
This unilateral decision by the United States has a destabilizing effect in the region and can potentially provoke a rise in violence. This territory and our region desperately need initiatives that promote peace and reconciliation, not actions likely to generate more anger and conflicts.
Along with the Caritas Confederation member organizations, present in 15 countries of the Middle East and North Africa region, we denounce this decision.
We join our voice to Pope Francis who made a heartfelt appeal ¨so that all commit themselves to respecting the status quo of the city, in conformity with the pertinent resolutions of the United Nations”.
We also add our voice to the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem demanding that special attention be given to any action that concerns the city of Jerusalem which may lead to greater destabilization in the region.
